Certified Inpatient Coder

The Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC) credential is the only certification dedicated solely to hospital and facility inpatient coding. This certification demonstrates expertise in extracting information from medical records for ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding. It also indicates advanced knowledge of Medicare Severity Diagnosis Related Groups (MS-DRGs) and the Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS). Unlike physician-based coding, inpatient coding is focused on services provided by the facility rather than the physician.

Earning the CIC certification qualifies you to work in the dynamic field of medical coding and billing within hospital inpatient settings. CIC-certified professionals are typically employed in various healthcare environments, including hospitals (acute care facilities), skilled nursing facilities (SNFs), critical access hospitals (CAHs), teaching hospitals, inpatient rehabilitation facilities (IRFs), and long-term care hospitals (LTCHs).
