Injury, Poisoning and certain other consequences of external causes
(S00 – T88)

Burn: Burn codes thermal burns, that comes from a heat source, such as fire or hot appliance.

Corrosion burn: Due to chemicals

We have three degree in burn. If epidermis is involved, we code first degree. If dermis is involved we code second degree. If hypodermis is involved we code third degree.

Always code higher degree first

  • Always code higher degree first.
  • First we identify the site for e.g. chest, face, extremities
  • Second we code severity, third degree, second degree, and first degree
  • TBSA (Total Body Surface Area) for e.g. abdomen 5%, face 2%, extremity 5% = 12%. Assign the accordingly.
  • Cause: Place of occurrence and Activity

Rule of nine

Our body parts are divided into rule of 9

  • Trunk area (front and back) 18%
  • Lower extremities 36%
  • Upper extremities 36% 
  • Face 9%
  • Genitals 1%

Non healing burns are coded as acute burns

 

Poisoning

These four are example of poisoning

  • Error was made in drug prescription.
  • Overdose of a drug intentionally taken
  • Nonprescribed drug taken with correctly prescribed and properly administered drug
  • Interaction of drug(s) and alcohol

Underdosing and Adverse effect not covered under poisoning
