Diabetes is a condition that happens when your blood sugar (glucose) is too high

Diabetes mellitus is two type:

Type 1: Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (IDDM)

Type 2: Non insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (NIDDM)

If type of diabetes mellitus is not documented in your documentation, so assign the code Type 2 diabetes without complication E11._

  • If patient regularly use of insulin pump so assign the code Z79.4
  • If patient regularly use of oral hypoglycemic drugs so assign the code Z79.84
  • If temporary and episodic use of pump, so no need to code Z79.4 or Z79.84
  • Diabetes mellitus in pregnancy so we call gestational diabetes and code started from “O” series.
  • Complication due to insulin pump malfunctioning, we have two condition : underdosing and overdosing and code start from T series

Secondary Diabetes Mellitus

If patient is suffering for diabetes for any other reason like due to drugs, due to chemicals, due to pancreatectomy, so we called secondary diabetes. E08, E09, E13
