The Nervous System

The Nervous system is an intricate communication network of structures that activates and controls all functions of the body and receives all input from the environment.

Anatomical Terms

Word                                                        Meaning

Central Nervous System                      :  Brain and spinal cord

Brain:                                                    :Portion of the central nervous system                                                                           contained  within the cranium     

 

Lobes:

  • Frontal Lobe: Responsible for voluntary muscle movement and personality
  • Parietal Lobe: Responsible for sensations such as pain, temperature, touch
  • Temporal Lobe: Responsible for hearing, taste and smell
  • Occipital Lobe: Responsible for vision

CSF: Cerebrospinal fluid:  Plasma like fluid circulating in an around the brain and                                                spinal cord

Aphasia:    Inability to speak

Dysphagia:  Difficulty speaking

Delirium:  a state of mental confusion due to disturbance in cerebral function

Dementia:  an impairment of intellectual function characterized by memory loss

Neuralgia:  Pain along the course of a nerve

Seizure:      transient disturbance in brain function

CVA:         Cerebrovascular accident, damage to the brain caused by                                          cerebrovascular disease

TIA:           Transient Ischemic attack

Epilepsy :  Disorder affecting the central nervous system characterized by                                   recurrent seizures

Multiple sclerosis:  disease of central nervous system characterized by the                                               demyelination

Operative Terms:

Craniectomy:   Excision of part of the skull to approach the brain

Craniotomy:   Incision into the skull to approach the brain 

Discectomy:  Removal of a herniated disc often done percutaneously

Laminectomy:  Excision of one or more laminae of the vertebrae to approach the                               spinal cord 

Neuroplasty:    Surgical repair of a nerve
