If a type 1 NSTEMI evolves to STEMI, assign the STEMI code. If a type 1 STEMI converts to NSTEMI due to thrombolytic therapy, it is still coded as STEMI.

What is NSTEMI and STEMI

NSTEMI: Non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). Partially blockage of one of the coronary arteries, causing reduced flow of oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscles.

STEMI: A heart attack with a completely blocked coronary artery is called a STEMI. STEMI stands for ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction. On a heart tracing there is a particular area that is called the ST segment.
